Is HD-CVI better than HD-SDI, IPC ?

Since 2012, the first HD-CVI came into season, it brought a huge stir in the market.

Compared with HD-SDI, HD-CVI has its amazing advantages.

Both HD-CVI and HD-SDI can support 720P or 1080P transmission, but HD-CVI is born with strength in transmission distance.

HD-SDI just has a transmission distance at 100m with some good transmission media, even use HDcctv 2.0 can reach at 300m. Thanks to Mr.Todd Rockoff and his team, HDcctv 3.0 LR (under development) addressed the transmission distance, that maybe a good news.

But so far, in the current market, HD-CVI seems to be the best solution in long distance transmission, HD-CVI can reach at least 500m in the use of 75-3 cables, with low signal distortion and attenuation; when using 75-5 or better cables, the transmission distance can reach farther. And then secondly, since the HD-SDI came into market, it has always been featured with its poor anti-interference ability, especially under the High-Frequency Electromagnetic Radiation, such as Mobile, Wifi Router, etc; the interference from a strong High-Frequency Electromagnetic Radiation will cause high bit error rate, such as unusual imagery, blurred screen and so on.

However, not like HD-SDI, HD-CVI has a great ability to avoid the interference from High-Frequency Electromagnetic Radiation, it can make sure a high-quality image even under strong interference. In addition, HD-SDI requires high in cables, such as a well planed installing path and high welding quality, so the installing and maintenance cost is very high. While HD-CVI follows the same construction requirement and specification with Analog SD-SDI, more convenient.

Compared with IP camera. The advantage is

1. Use P2P transmission which can make sure the reliability of signal. IPC must need a Ethernet Router and had a high request for network bandwith. Some problems such as Network jitter, latency and data loss may happen, especially the network environment is not good. But HD-CVI don’t have these problems. And there is no compression for the signal which comes from the camera, it can offer a high level imagery.

2. As the words mentioned before, HD-CVI follows the same construction requirement with Analog SD-SDI, which means people can upgrade SD-SDI to HD-CVI directly by just replace the Camera and DVR.

3. From the point of Installation, HD-CVI is more convenient than IPC. “Plug and Play” is a big convenience for HD-CVI, but IPC need many settings such as IP ,DNS address setting.

It has its weakness, some people still holds a wait-and-see attitude to HD-CVI.

Though HD-CVI has so many advantages, it also has some short commings

1. HD-CVI can’t support the compression for the video signal. Which means a lot of data should be transported to the back-end system.

2. HD-CVI had a signal attenuation at a distance of 400m+.

On the contrary, since 2010, IPC’s full product range, cost effective, adaptability got an echo in the market. As the development of 4G, Cloud storage, the home use market goes with optimism. In Chinese national market, HD serials accounts for 30%, of which IPC&NVR account for 95%, and HD-SDI&HD-CVI account for 5%.

In addition, some people think that, HD-CVI is mainly used in some place such as bank, which had a high requirement for real-time monitoring. And as the booming for civil surveillance, civil surveillance goes into the internet age, compared with the openness and standardization of IPC, the HD-CVI can’t suit well in this field.
